Use Search Engines to Protect Your Business

There are multiple ways to protect your company's name and reputation. The search engines make it easy to monitor. Here's a checklist:

CONTENT THEFT: Are other companies stealing your website content? This is easy to detect by selecting unique phrases from your website and doing a search for that exact phrase. Use several search engines, not just Google, and include quote marks around the phrase to get an exact match.

Many companies are not aware of the real cost of this type of theft. Not only have companies made a significant investment in content creation, but often that content has been carefully optimzed to attract the search engines. If other websites are using your content then your chances of a high ranking are reduced. One way to check for copyright violations is to use the free service at www.copyscape.com.

Here is an example of how to use Google to search for content on your site that other sites have taken:

PPC ADS: Identify if competitors are buying PPC ads using your company name or product names. The legal debate is still raging on this issue. Whether or not it is legal to buy advertising under a competitor's name should be discussed with your attorney.

BLOG RESEARCH: Research what companies are saying about you in the Blog Search Engines. View a listing of blog search engines.

TRADEMARK VIOLATIONS: Identify if competitors are including your company name on their websites in an unauthorized manner. Type your company name "Your Company" in several different search engines (include the quote marks).
  • Be aware that some companies may unintentionally take your entire website and include it within their website assuming that they are promoting your company (this is usually done using "frames", an HTML technique).

Two different websites on one web page!

  • This could be construed as copyright infringement.
